How long does local SEO take? Only 2 of 8 Grand Rapids agency pages will tell you — and both say three to six months

Page one for this question is forum threads and agency blogs that all land on “it depends, usually a few months”. Nobody checked what the agencies a Grand Rapids business would actually call are willing to say about time on their own pages, so on 16 September 2026 I read them.

Quick answer

Three to six months for ranking movement, by the only two local numbers on offer. On 16 September 2026 I read the Grand Rapids SEO page of the eight agencies on page one for the search. Two state a timeline: “most Grand Rapids businesses see meaningful ranking movement within 3 to 6 months” (helium-seo.com) and “Rankings typically improve within 60-90 days … significant improvements in 3-6 months” (rankworks.com). Six say nothing about time.

Google’s own starter guide, read the same day, says some changes take effect in a few hours and others could take several months, and that you likely want to wait a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. Nobody can promise a date, and Google says to find someone else if they guarantee first place.

Ours is built around that clock: a three-month initial commitment, then month to month, Local SEO from $750 a month, an audit with a 90-day roadmap, and you own every page, profile and asset whether you stay or go.

The honest answer to this question is a range, and every page on the internet gives one. What none of them gives a Grand Rapids business is what its own local options put in writing — which matters, because the timeline is the thing that decides whether a three-month bill was a fair test or a wasted quarter. So this page reads the eight agency pages a local search returns, quotes the two that commit to a number, then explains why the clock is months long and what you can check for yourself at month one and month three without taking anyone’s word for it.

What eight Grand Rapids agency pages say about time

The eight are the same eight agencies as on the contracts page: every agency’s Grand Rapids SEO page on page one for seo company grand rapids, directories excluded, read again on 16 September 2026. This time I read each page for one thing: does it say how long SEO takes to show a result, and what does it say? Only the served HTML was read; a number added by a script after load would be missed.

digitalpiloto.comNo
Eight pages2 of 8Both windows overlap at three to six months

Two readings. First, the number a Grand Rapids business is most likely to be quoted before it calls anyone is three to six months, because that is the only number on offer — and the agency that states it also adds a nine-month line further down the page, which is the more careful of the two claims. Second, the same two pages that state a timeline also happen to be the two that publish a price or a market range on the contracts reading. Six of eight will tell you how long it takes on the sales call, after you have given your number. Neither figure is measured; both are the agency’s own claim about its own work, and they are quoted here as that.

What Google itself says about the clock

Google does not publish a timeline for local rankings. What it does publish, in its SEO starter guide, is this: “Every change you make will take some time to be reflected on Google’s end. Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months. In general, you likely want to wait a few weeks to assess whether your work had beneficial effects in Google Search results” (developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide, read 16 September 2026). And in its guidance on hiring an SEO: “An SEO audit should be about giving you realistic estimates of improvement, and an estimate of the work involved. If they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else” (developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/do-i-need-seo, read 16 September 2026). Hours to months, judged in weeks, promised by nobody. That is the whole of what the search engine will commit to, and it is more than six of the eight agency pages do.

The work can be done in month one. Its effect cannot.

Why it takes months: the four clocks

Local SEO is four different jobs whose results arrive on four different clocks, and an agency controls the pace of only the first.

That is why a three-month number is not a dodge. It is roughly the time for the first clock to finish and the second and third to start showing, and it is why an agency that has done this before asks for three months up front and why our own SEO page does the same.

What you can check yourself, without taking anyone’s word

A timeline you cannot verify is a story. These are the things that should be visibly true at each point, whoever is doing the work — a plan, not a promise of outcomes, because outcomes are Google’s to give.

WhenWhat should be trueHow you check it
Month oneThe audit is in your hands; the profile is complete; the new pages are live; the citations are submitted; review requests are going outOpen the profile in your own Google account and read every field; open the pages; ask for the list of directories submitted, with links
Month two to threeThe new pages are indexed; the profile edits show on Maps; the review count is higher than at the start; the site shows impressions for the queries it was built forSearch Console in your own account (pages, queries, impressions); the review count on your own listing; the citations resolving where they were submitted
Month three to sixThe window both Grand Rapids agency pages quote for ranking movement, and the point to decide whether the work is movingPosition on your own queries, in Search Console and on Maps from a phone in your service area — read as a trend, not a day
Any monthEverything built is in your nameProfile in your Google account with the agency as a manager; pages on your domain; analytics you can log into — how to check

What to accept, by what you are told

What the agency says about timeRead it asWhat to do
Nothing on the website; “it depends” on the callThe normal case — 6 of the 8 pages readAsk for the month-one and month-three checkpoints above in writing, and what you keep if you stop
“Three to six months”The window both local pages quote; consistent with Google’s “hours to months”Fine, if the term matches it and goes month to month afterwards
“Quick wins in 30 to 60 days”Site fixes and profile completion can show that fast; rankings usually cannotAsk which wins, and whether they are things you could check yourself in month one
“Results in weeks” or a date for page oneGoogle says no one can guarantee a rankingWalk away, whatever the price
“It takes twelve months, so sign for twelve”The term protects the agency’s revenue, not the clockThree months, then month to month; the work does not need a year of lock-in to take a year

What this reading does not prove

How we do it

The terms are on the SEO page: a three-month initial commitment because that is the time the first clock needs, then month to month, and you own every page, profile and asset we build even if you leave. Local SEO for a single-location business starts at $750 a month and is built around the profile, reviews, citations and local landing pages, with reporting. If you want the clock started with a map before any retainer, the SEO Audit & Roadmap is $1,500 once, delivered in two weeks with a prioritised 90-day roadmap, and it is yours to keep whether or not we do the work — the month-one checkpoint, in writing, before you commit to a month two. What a fair term looks like and what Grand Rapids agencies charge are the other two questions to settle before the call; whether the profile alone is enough is the one to settle before either.

Common questions

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Three to six months for ranking movement, by the only two local figures on offer. Of the eight Grand Rapids SEO agency pages on page one for the search, read on 16 September 2026, one says most businesses see meaningful ranking movement within 3 to 6 months, one says rankings typically improve within 60 to 90 days with significant improvements in 3 to 6 months, and six say nothing about time. Google’s own starter guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others could take several months. Nobody can promise a date, and Google says to walk away from anyone who guarantees first place.

Why does local SEO take months instead of weeks?

Because four clocks run at once and you control only one of them. Google has to crawl and index new pages and re-judge them against the pages already ranking; profile edits and citations have to be picked up by Google and by the directories; reviews arrive at the pace your customers leave them, and the top three map spots for four Grand Rapids trades held 22 to 12,142 reviews on 15 September 2026; and links to the site come slowest of all. The work can be done in month one. Its effect cannot.

Should I sign a long SEO contract to give it time to work?

Give it the time the work needs, not the time the agency wants. A three-month minimum matches the shortest window either Grand Rapids agency page quotes; six is defensible in a competitive trade; after that it should go month to month with a normal notice period. Ask for month-one and month-three checkpoints you can see yourself — pages indexed, profile complete, citations live, review count moving — and for everything built to stay yours if you leave. Ours is a three-month initial commitment, then month to month, Local SEO from $750 a month.
