Page one for this question is ten lists of “questions to ask”, none of which checked whether the agencies a Grand Rapids business would call have already answered any of them. So on 16 September 2026 I read the eight local agency pages a search returns and scored each against five questions a business owner needs answered before signing.
Ask five things, in writing: what it costs, how long you are signed for, how long until results, who owns the work if you leave, and how often you get a report. On 16 September 2026 I read the Grand Rapids SEO page of each of the eight agencies on page one for seo company grand rapids and checked which of the five each page answers before you call. Eight pages, forty possible answers, five given. One agency (helium-seo.com) answers four; one (rankworks.com) answers one; six answer none. No page says who owns the pages, profile and accounts if you go.
Google’s own guidance for hiring an SEO, read the same day, is that an audit should give you “realistic estimates of improvement, and an estimate of the work involved”, and that if they guarantee first place, “find someone else.” Treat “it depends” as a no until it is a number on paper.
Ours are on the SEO page: Local SEO from $750 a month, a three-month initial commitment then month to month, local movement in four to eight weeks and competitive terms in four to six months, a live dashboard instead of a monthly PDF, and you own every page, profile and asset we build, even if you leave.
Every list of “questions to ask an SEO agency” assumes you will get the answers on a call, and most of them are twenty-five questions long, which is a list nobody asks. This page cuts it to the five whose answers decide whether a bad month costs you a month or a year, and then measures the only thing about them that can be measured from outside: whether the agencies a Grand Rapids business will actually find have put the answers on the page where you would look first. The same eight pages were read earlier for contracts and timelines; this reading adds ownership and reporting and scores all five together.
The eight are the page-one agencies for seo company grand rapids, directories excluded, the same set as the contracts and timeline readings, each read again on 16 September 2026 for all five questions. Only what the served page says counts; a number that lives on a separate pricing page or behind a form is “No”, with the link noted. One page (digitalpiloto.com) refused a direct request and was read through a fetch service the same day.
| Agency page (read 16 Sep 2026) | 1. Price | 2. Term | 3. Time to results | 4. Who owns the work | 5. Report cadence | Answered |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| thriveagency.com | No — the only dollar figures are budget drop-downs on its forms | No | No | No | No — “regular and transparent updates”, no cadence | 0 of 5 |
| oneims.com | No | No | No | No | No — “we track and report results to you”, no cadence | 0 of 5 |
| jsl.marketing | No — links to a “pricing request” | No | No | No | No — “detailed analytics and reporting”, no cadence | 0 of 5 |

| elit-web.com | No — “formulated with reference to market prices” | No | No | No | No | 0 of 5 |
| helium-seo.com | Yes — “campaigns starting at $2,500/m”; most “between $1,000 and $5,000+ per month” | Yes — “month-to-month terms with no long-term contracts” | Yes — “meaningful ranking movement within 3 to 6 months” | No — “what happens if I want to leave?” is answered with the terms, not with ownership | Yes — “In-Depth Report (weekly/Monthly)” and a client dashboard | 4 of 5 |
| rankworks.com | No — a market range, “$1,500 to $5,000+ monthly”, not its own price | No | Yes — “rankings typically improve within 60-90 days”, “significant improvements in 3-6 months” | No | No — “detailed reports”, no cadence | 1 of 5 |

Three readings. First, the one agency that answers is the one that answers almost everything: helium-seo.com puts its starting price, its month-to-month terms, its three-to-six-month window and its reporting cadence on the same page, which is what a page built for a buyer looks like. Second, “reporting” is on five of the eight pages as a word and on one as a schedule — the difference between promising a report and committing to one. Third, the column that comes up empty is the one with the most money in it. Not one page says whether the pages, the profile and the accounts are yours when you stop paying, and the cost of finding out later is the subject of what happens if your web designer closes.
Five of forty answers are on the page. The other thirty-five are on the call, after you have given your number.
Where a page does not answer, it usually says something else in the same place, and the substitutions are worth knowing so you recognise them on the call.
Google publishes guidance for businesses hiring an SEO, and two sentences of it settle the guarantee question. On what you should get: “An SEO audit should be about giving you realistic estimates of improvement, and an estimate of the work involved.” On what should end the conversation: “If they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else” (developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/do-i-need-seo, read 16 September 2026). None of the eight pages guarantees a ranking. One promises percentages, which is the same instinct with a different unit. And “page one” itself is a weaker promise than it sounds: on our own sites, positions 4 to 10 earned nine clicks from 3,228 impressions.
| Question | Accept | Push back on | Walk away from |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Price | A starting price with what it includes; a fixed quote before work starts | “Depends on scope” with no floor — ask for the floor and its scope | A price that changes after you have shared your budget |
| 2. Term | Three months initial, then month to month with a notice period | Six months in a competitive trade, if the checkpoints below are in writing | Twelve months with no exit and no checkpoints |
| 3. Time to results | A range like three to six months, with month-one and month-three checks you can do yourself | “Quick wins in 30 days” — ask which wins, and whether you could verify them | A date for page one, or a percentage with no baseline |
| 4. Ownership | You as primary owner of domain, site, profile, Search Console and analytics; the agency as a manager or user; content yours to keep | “We’ll transfer it when you leave” — ask why it is not yours now | Anything that lives in the agency’s accounts with no written transfer |
| 5. Reporting | A cadence and the contents — clicks, calls, positions on named queries — in a dashboard you can log into | A monthly PDF — ask for the Search Console and profile data behind it | Reports of “visibility” and impressions with no clicks or calls |
The five answers are on the SEO page, so you can score it the same way. Price: Local SEO from $750 a month for a single-location business, Growth SEO from $2,500, or a one-time SEO Audit & Roadmap at $1,500 that is yours to keep whether or not we do the work. Term: a three-month initial commitment, then month to month. Time: technical fixes and Business Profile work can move local rankings and calls in four to eight weeks; competitive keyword rankings usually take four to six months. Ownership: you own every page, profile and asset we build, even if you leave. Reporting: a live dashboard showing rankings, traffic and calls, not a monthly PDF. If the question is really about which agency, how to choose a web design company in Grand Rapids covers the build side and what Grand Rapids agencies charge the money; if it is about the profile, what profile management costs and our Business Profile page are the two to read. How to check what you own today is the one to do before any of them.

Our own terms. The SEO page on this site as published: Local SEO $750 a month starting; Growth SEO $2,500 a month starting; SEO Audit & Roadmap $1,500 one time, yours to keep; three-month initial commitment, then month to month; local movement in 4–8 weeks, competitive terms in 4–6 months; live dashboard; you own every page, profile and asset.
Five, in writing: what it costs per month and what is in that number; how long you are signed for and what notice ends it; how long until you should expect movement and what you can check yourself at month one and month three; who owns the pages, the Google Business Profile, the analytics and the content if you leave; and how often you get a report and what is in it. On 16 September 2026 the eight Grand Rapids SEO agency pages on page one for the search answered 5 of those 40 possible answers before the call — one agency four, one agency one, six none. The answers exist; you have to ask for them.
No, and Google says so in its own guidance for people hiring one, read 16 September 2026: an audit should give you realistic estimates of improvement and of the work involved, and if they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else. Of the eight Grand Rapids agency pages read the same day, none guarantees a ranking; one promises percentage increases in enquiries and decreases in click costs, which is an outcome no agency controls. Treat a promised number as a reason to ask how it will be measured, not as a reason to sign.
You. The domain in your registrar account, the site on hosting you can log into, the Google Business Profile with you as primary owner and the agency added as a manager, Search Console and analytics on your Google account with the agency as a user, and the content written for you yours to keep. None of the eight Grand Rapids agency pages read on 16 September 2026 says any of this either way, so it has to be asked and written into the agreement. Ours is on the SEO page: you own every page, profile and asset we build, even if you leave.
Send it over. I'll score it against the five questions above, tell you which answers are missing, and give you the wording to ask for — in plain words, before you sign anything.
Works whether or not you end up working with me.
